Rare Signed Photo of Ruth and Gehrig Goes on Auction Block

In the world of baseball memorabilia, there are certain items that simply stand out. One such artifact is a recently discovered photograph of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, autographed by both players and authenticated as an original Type 1 print. Captured by acclaimed photographer Arthur Hull, known for his work with The New York Times and The Associated Press, this photograph is a poignant reminder of baseball’s golden age, featuring two of its most iconic figures during a relaxed moment at the Yankees’ spring training camp between 1927 and 1931.

What sets this photograph apart is not just the subjects it captures, but the level of care that went into its preservation. Ruth and Gehrig autographed the photograph with a precision that reflects Hull’s dedication to his craft and his ability to bring out the best in his subjects. Keith Breitweiser, an acquisitions specialist at Lelands, the auction house handling the sale, praises the exceptional quality of both the autographs and the photograph itself, stating, “These are the two most iconic players who ever played the game on the most iconic team. The autographs are some of the nicest you’ll find.”

The journey of this photograph to the auction block is a captivating tale of historical preservation and serendipity. After Hull’s passing in 1969, Karl Allison and a friend acquired the photographer’s collection, including this signed photograph, from Hull’s widow for a nominal sum. Among the treasure trove of negatives and photographs spanning Hull’s illustrious career, the signed photograph of Ruth and Gehrig caught Allison’s attention. Realizing its significance, he kept it safe from the ravages of time, storing it away from light, and creating a duplicate for display purposes.

The significance of this photograph extends beyond its visual appeal; it represents a rare opportunity to own a piece of sports history. Signed photographs of Ruth and Gehrig, particularly those authenticated as Type 1 originals and in excellent condition, are exceedingly rare and highly sought after by collectors. Hence, the upcoming auction, starting on February 25, is expected to generate significant interest from collectors and enthusiasts alike, providing a unique chance to acquire a tangible piece of baseball’s storied past.

Beyond celebrating the enduring fascination with Ruth and Gehrig, this auction also highlights the importance of meticulous preservation and the role of photography in capturing and commemorating the legends of the sport. As this photograph embarks on a new chapter, it continues to honor the legacy of two of baseball’s most revered figures, immortalized by Arthur Hull’s lens and preserved through the decades as a testament to their monumental impact on the game and American culture at large.

It is not often that such a historic artifact becomes available for sale, especially one that captures the magic and camaraderie between two baseball legends like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. The photograph’s combination of rarity, authenticity, and historical significance makes it a truly remarkable find. As collectors eagerly await the start of the auction, they prepare to vie for the chance to own this cherished piece of sports history, a testament to the enduring legacy of Ruth and Gehrig and their lasting impact on the game of baseball.
