REA’s February Auction Sets Vintage Card Sales Records

Robert Edward Auctions (REA) hit a home run, or perhaps a slam dunk, with their recently concluded February auction, breaking records and turning heads in the world of vintage sports card collecting. The star of the show was a stunning PSA 5 graded M116 Sporting Life Honus Wagner card, which fetched an impressive $75,000, setting a new benchmark for its version.

This noteworthy sale showcased the continued high demand for rare vintage sports cards, with collectors eagerly vying for these prized pieces of sports memorabilia. Another standout item from the auction was a Ty Cobb Blue Background card from the same M116 Sporting Life series. Graded PSA GOOD 2, this card shattered records for its condition, selling for a substantial $15,000 to a lucky bidder.

The auction also saw a surge in interest from registry builders and collectors, drawn in by the offering of ten Mint 9 graded cards from the 196 Topps set. Of these, a #2 Roman Mejias PSA MINT 9 card stole the spotlight, commanding an impressive auction high of $19,200. This marked the highest price ever paid for a non-Hall of Famer card from this set in its grade, further demonstrating the fervor surrounding vintage card collecting.

With a vast array of 2,732 items on the auction block, REA presented a diverse selection of collectibles that appealed to a wide range of enthusiasts. Notable mentions among the top sellers included a 1909-1911 T206 White Border Ty Cobb Portrait Red Background card, graded PSA VG-EX 4, which fetched $21,000. Additionally, a 1934 R320 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig card in PSA EX-MT 6 condition sold for $18,000, while a complete 1986-1987 Fleer Basketball PSA NM-MT 8 Set commanded a price of $12,000, captivating collectors’ attention.

Brian Dwyer, President of REA, expressed his satisfaction with the auction’s success and the enthusiastic response from the collector community. Hinting at exciting prospects on the horizon, Dwyer alluded to upcoming attractions for REA’s March and Spring Auctions, promising continued excitement and opportunities for sports collectibles enthusiasts.

The recent achievements of REA’s February auction not only reaffirm the timeless popularity and enduring value of vintage sports cards and memorabilia but also set the stage for future events that are sure to captivate collectors and enthusiasts alike. With the next Encore event slated for March 14-24 and the Spring Catalog Auction kicking off on April 5, REA remains at the forefront of the sports collectibles market, offering a platform for unparalleled excitement and discovery.
