This event marked the first instance where an authentic championship ring from the Rangers was made accessible to the general public.
The significance of this ring lies in its association with the Rangers’ first championship victory in 54 years, rendering it an exceedingly rare piece of sports memorabilia. Tikkanen played a pivotal role in the team’s triumphant journey, distinguishing himself as one of the seven Rangers players who managed to score over 20 goals and accumulate more than 50 points throughout the season.
The exorbitant value attached to the ring is predominantly fueled by its scarcity factor. In contrast to the championship rings from 1933 and 1940, which remain unaccounted for in public sales, this authentic 1994 Rangers ring stands out. The only remotely similar item was a commemorative ring presented to Rangers’ center Cliff Smith in 1990, which was sold for $6,600 in 2017.
Notably, Tikkanen had previously auctioned off four out of his five other Stanley Cup rings. His 1987 and 1988 rings from the Edmonton Oilers were each snatched up for $40,388, while his 1990 Oilers ring commanded a price of $44,428. Despite these substantial amounts, the 1994 Rangers ring held the highest value due to the team’s limited championship wins, having secured a mere three Stanley Cups in nearly a century.
This remarkable sale transpired only four months following a groundbreaking record set for Stanley Cup rings. Heritage Auctions oversaw the sale of two championship rings belonging to Mike Bossy of the New York Islanders, with the 1981 ring fetching $228,000 and the 1980 counterpart going for $220,000. Preceding this feat, the most expensive Stanley Cup ring sold was a 1990 Oilers ring owned by former owner Peter Pocklington, which was purchased for $72,151 at Classic Auctions in 2009.
